Facebook-owned Instagram launched 'Instagram Lite'which targets android users in emerging markets.

Instagram Lite is only 1/55th the size of regular Instagram and it is currently available in Mexico and will slowly expand to other countries.

It does not allow users to post videos or send a direct message.The new app will run on android versions 5.0 and above.

With 'Instagram Lite', the company is focusing on countries where data is expensive and network is patchy.

Instagram hit the one billion users milestone recently and is looking to enter new markets.

Facebook had launched Facebook Lite in 2015 and Messenger Lite in April this year.
