India will be a major contributor to 6G tech globally by 2029, says Ashwini Vaishnaw

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, said work on making India a leader in the 6G technology has already started and that the country will be a major contributor to technology globally by 2029.

In June this year, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) approved India's 6G network, naming it ‘IMT 2030’. The ITU 6G Framework has been formulated with collaborative efforts of member countries of the United Nations (UN).

This came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi had released the 6G Vision “Bharat 6G Vision” document on March 23, 2023, which envisages India to be a "front-line contributor in design, development and deployment of 6G technology by 2030." Bharat 6G Vision is based on principles of affordability, sustainability and ubiquity.

The minister also lauded Google’s decision to make Pixel smartphones in India as a very big achievement. "Manufacturing of Google Pixel in India is a big announcement," he said.

Tech giant Google announced on Thursday, October 19, that its Pixel 8 will come to the Indian market in 2024. The announcement was made at the Google for India 2023 event by Google Senior Vice President for Devices and Services Rick Osterloh.

"This is good for Google and good for India," Vaishnaw observed.

Vaishnaw also expressed his satisfaction with domestic electronics manufacturing at present, highlighting it has crossed the 100-billion-dollar mark. “When we launched the Digital India and Make in India initiatives, electronic manufacturing in India was very small.”

“Mobile phone manufacturing that was negligible, has now crossed 44 billion dollars. Mobile exports stand at 11 billion dollars,” he added.

India is also aiming to emerge as a major manufacturer of laptops, tablets and servers and Vaishnaw hoped to replicate mobile manufacturing success in these devices.
