Instagram will not track your online activity now, says Meta
Oct 18, 2023 5:17 AM

If you are someone who is concerned about Instagram eavesdropping on your conversations and incessantly tailing your online activity to lure you with advertisements that you will end up giving in to, then Meta has some good news for you.

The tech giant made an announcement on Wednesday, October 18, saying that it will block Instagram from tracking your activity on third-party websites that use its business tools. The feature called Activity Off-Meta Technologies, which was previously only available on Facebook, can now be found within the platform’s Accounts Center.

“Activity Off-Meta Technologies allows you to manage how information other businesses send to us is connected to your Facebook and Instagram accounts. You can easily review the businesses that are sharing data with Meta, disconnect specific ones to further personalise your experience, or clear this data entirely – it’s up to you,” Meta said.

Meta also announced other features it added to the Accounts Center on Instagram, including a way to transfer your photos and videos on the platform to other services. The company, however, did not specify which services you can transfer the data to.

“For example, if you’re interested in using a third-party service to create and print a photo album using photos you’ve uploaded to Instagram, this is now easier than ever,” the company added. This feature was also only limited to Facebook prior to this.

Users will now also be able to download their Facebook and Instagram data at the same time or choose to download them separately, a feature which has been around for a while.

You can find Accounts Center in the Settings menu on Facebook, Instagram and Messenger.

Meta originally introduced the redesigned Accounts Center in January, providing a centralised site for managing settings across your Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger accounts.
