The Nintendo Switch has made history by becoming the longest-lasting Nintendo ADR‘s (OTC:NTDOY) home console ever, surpassing the record previously held by the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).

As of July 11, the Switch has lasted 2,687 days without a successor. It broke the 34-year-old record of the NES, which was replaced by the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in November 1990, VGC reported.

The Switch’s impressive run is likely to continue, with the Switch 2 not expected to launch before March 2025.

This delay could push the Switch’s longevity to over 2,900 days, further solidifying its position as Nintendo’s longest-lasting home console.

The Switch’s success is attributed to its hybrid design, which allows it to function both as a handheld and a home console. This versatility has made it a favorite among gamers, with over 141.32 million units sold as of March 31, 2024. 

The console’s library of games, including recent releases like “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom” and “Super Mario Party Jamboree,” has also contributed to its enduring appeal.

The Switch’s future is uncertain, but it is clear that Nintendo ( NTDOF ) is taking its time to develop the Switch 2, which is expected to be backward compatible with the current console. This approach could allow the Switch to continue thriving even after the Switch 2’s release, much like the 3DS continued to sell after the release of the Switch.
