17th November: OpenAI announced the dismissal of its CEO, Sam Altman, in a blog post. The company appointed CTO Mira Murati as the interim CEO. The board’s statement also said that the company’s long-time president and co-founder, Brockman, would continue in his other roles. OpenAI’s post stated that Altman’s departure followed a review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board. 18th November: Three senior OpenAI researchers resigned. Investors pressured OpenAI’s board to reinstate Altman, and many employees threatened mass resignations if Altman wasn’t brought back. In an internal memo, OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap stated that the management had “multiple conversations with the board to try to better understand the reasons and process behind their decision”. Altman thanked people for their support. The OpenAI board began discussions for Altman’s return to the company as its CEO.

19th November: Altman and Brockman joined executives at the company’s headquarters (at the then interim CEO Mira Murati’s invitation) to negotiate a possible return. According to a report by The Verge, one of Altman’s conditions for returning to the company was the removal of board members instrumental in his exit. 20th November Evening:In an open rebellion against the company’s board, nearly 500 OpenAI employees threatened to quit the company if the board didn’t resign and reappoint Altman and Brockman, The Wired reported. The employees said they would resign from the company and join Altman and Brockman at Microsoft. Meanwhile, Sutskever now seems to have some regrets about his role in Altman’s exit.
