TRAI Chairman Exclusive: PD Vaghela says that AI poses risks, but it can’t be shunned
Sep 27, 2023 9:53 AM

In an exclusive conversation with CNBC-TV18, TRAI Chairman PD Vaghela said that Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds both — tremendous opportunities and grave threats. But he noted that despite the threats, the technology cannot be shunned.

His comments come in the backdrop of TRAI issuing detailed recommendations on a regulatory framework for AI. In July, the TRAI had recommended an independent regulator, dedicated to AI.

PD Vaghela argued that there is a need for a risk-based mechanism. Under this mechanism, he said that potential harms and risks to national security, society or economy can be identified. He said that regulations can be developed, based on these identifiable risks posed.

Referencing the recently concluded G20 deliberations, he also highlighted the need for global collaboration on AI regulation. Batting for an international framework, he claimed that any one country, like India, cannot regulate AI. Here he said that India could take a leadership role in developing a regulatory framework.

He also expressed confidence in the Indian talent pool, noting that India can be a world leader in AI.

PD Vaghela is due to retire as TRAI Chairman on September 30. He will leave office after a three-year term. He took charge as TRAI Chairman on October 1, 2020.
