ASML Warning Caps European Bourses Midday
Jul 16, 2025 5:14 AM

07:57 AM EDT, 07/16/2025 (MT Newswires) -- European bourses tracked sideways midday Wednesday after Dutch technology giant ASML said that macro conditions make growth uncertain for it in 2026.

"Looking at 2026, we see that our AI customers' fundamentals remain strong," ASML Chief Executive Christophe Fouquet said. "At the same time, we continue to see increasing uncertainty driven by macroeconomic and geopolitical developments. Therefore, while we still prepare for growth in 2026, we cannot confirm it at this stage." The company's shares were down 6.9%.

Bank and oil stocks led gainers on continental trading floors, while property and tech issues lagged.

Investors also eyed muted Wall Street futures, and choppy closes overnight on Asian exchanges.

The pan-continental Stoxx Europe 600 Index was steady mid-session.

The Stoxx Europe 600 Technology Index was down 0.7%, but the Stoxx 600 Banks Index gained 0.4%.

The Stoxx Europe 600 Oil and Gas Index was up 0.6%, while Stoxx 600 Europe Food and Beverage Index added 0.3%.

The REITE, a European REIT index, fell 0.7%, while the Stoxx Europe 600 Retail Index was up 0.2%.

On the national market indexes, Germany's DAX was up 0.4%, and the FTSE 100 in London rose 0.2%. The CAC 40 in Paris was up 0.1%, and Spain's IBEX 35 gained 0.5%.

Yields on benchmark 10-year German bonds were lower, near 2.71%.

Front-month North Sea Brent crude-oil futures were off 0.8% at $68.13 a barrel.

The Euro Stoxx 50 volatility index was down 0.6% at 17.7, indicating below-average volatility for European stock markets in the next 30 days, a positive signal. A reading above 20 indicates choppier markets ahead, while below 20 suggests calmer exchanges.
