Calls for President Donald Trump's impeachment grows; here's what it means
Jan 7, 2021 12:38 PM

US President Donald Trump on Thursday conceded his defeat amid growing calls for his impeachment.

This came hours after his supporters wreaked havoc inside the US Capitol Complex. Four people died in the protests which have been condemned by world leaders.

Despite blatant attempts by President Trump to subvert the election, Vice President Mike Pence ensured that the Congress confirms Joe Biden's victory. But this protest was long in the making.

Stop the steal groups have been popping up on Facebook since 4th of November and Donald Trump has been tweeting about it since the 19th of December when he said, "Big protest in D.C. on January 6th. Be there, will be wild!".

There is now speculation of mass resignations from the Trump cabinet and strong calls for impeaching the President.

It is the 25th amendment of the US constitution which lays down how the President can be replaced and removed. Section 4 of the 25th amendment allows the Vice President and the cabinet to declare the President as unable to perform his duties.

In a rare move, Twitter blocked the President's account for 12 hours and Facebook for 24 hours. The US National Association of Manufacturers have also urged Mike Pence to invoke the 25th amendment to remove the President.

To discuss this, Parikshit Luthra spoke to, Frank Wisner, former US envoy to India; Meera Shankar, former Indian envoy to US; Michael Kugelman, deputy director - Asia program at The Wilson Centre and Craig Gilbert, bureau chief - Washington at Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
