Jan 2 (Reuters) - Canada's main stock index opened

higher on Thursday, the first trading day of the year, as higher

oil and gold prices propped up energy and mining sectors.

At 9:34 a.m. ET (1434 GMT), the Toronto Stock Exchange's

S&P/TSX composite index was up 0.8%, at 24,935.81

points.
