06:42 AM EDT, 08/07/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Asian stock markets joined the global equities rebound Wednesday, as tech issues generally recovered.
Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo finished in the green, as did most other regional exchanges.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 opened lower but rose to the close, finishing up 1.2% after a Bank of Japan official indicated central bank tightening may be held in abeyance until recent financial turmoils ease.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 rose 414.16 to 35,089.62, as gaining issues outnumbered losers 162 to 63.
Leading the upside was semiconductor manufacturing equipment maker Disco, gaining 12.4%. IT giant NTT Data fell back 10.8% after reporting earnings.
Japan Steel Works, which gained 23.2% on Tuesday after reporting earnings, rose another 11.6% on the day.
In economic news, Japan's coincident index of business conditions declined to 113.7 in June from 117.1 in May, and indicated an economy that was "halting to fall," reported the nation's Cabinet Office.
The nation's leading index of business conditions, an estimate of expected future economic activity, dropped to 108.6 in June from 111.2 in May.
In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index opened higher on global equities cues and gained from there, finishing up 1.4%. Tech issues firmed.
The broad gauge Hang Seng rose 230.52 to 16,877.86, as rising issues outnumbered losers 68 to 12. The Hang Seng TECH index gained 1.2% on the day, while the Mainland Properties Index rose 0.5%.
Leading the upside was aluminum producer China Hongqiao, gaining 5%, while gaming house Sands China fell 2.5%.
On the mainland, the Shanghai Composite rose 0.1% to 2,869.83.
In economic news, mainland China's exports in July grew 7% in dollar terms on year, below consensus expectations, while imports rose 7.2% in the same time frame, above outlooks.
On the other regional exchanges, the S. Korean KOSPI rose 1.8%; the Taiwan TWSE gained 3.9%; the Australian ASX 200 inclined 0.3%; the Singapore Straits Times Index rose 1.6%, and the Thai Set added 1.3%. In late trading in Mumbai, the Sensex was up 1.1%.
