Investors also eyed Wall Street futures signaling a higher open.
The pan-continental Stoxx Europe 600 Index was up 0.3% mid-session.
The Stoxx Europe 600 Technology Index was advanced by 0.4%, and the Stoxx 600 Banks Index was 0.7% higher.
The Stoxx Europe 600 Oil and Gas Index was up 1%, and the Stoxx 600 Europe Food and Beverage Index was 0.1% higher.
The REITE, a European REIT index, was 0.6% higher, and the Stoxx Europe 600 Retail Index rose by 0.4%.
On the national market indexes, German markets are closed on New Year's Eve and Jan. 1 with trading set to continue Thursday. The FTSE 100 in London was up 0.6%, while the CAC 40 in Paris was 6% higher, and Spain's IBEX 35 advanced by 0.5%.
Yields on benchmark 10-year German bonds were at 2.37%. Front-month North Sea Brent crude-oil futures were up 0.6% to $74.47 per barrel.
The Euro Stoxx 50 volatility index was up 4.5% to 17. A reading above 20 indicates choppier markets ahead, while below 20 suggests calmer exchanges.
