European Equities Close Higher on Monday; EU Probes Apple for Breach of Digital Competition Law

12:28 PM EDT, 06/24/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The European stock markets closed higher in Monday trading as the Stoxx Europe 600 rose 0.84%, the Swiss Market Index climbed 1.20%, France's CAC increased 1.03%, the FTSE in London gained 0.53%, and Germany's DAX was up 0.99%.

The European Union said Monday that it has provided nearly 3 billion euros ($3.2 billion) to support 39 energy projects in 10 EU member countries.

The European Investment Bank said Monday it is providing a 1.2 billion euro loan to German energy company RWE to construct a 1.1-gigawatt offshore wind farm in the Danish territory of the North Sea.

And in corporate news, Apple's ( AAPL ) App Store is in breach of the European Commission's new digital competition law, the regulator said Monday, while also opening a second investigation into contract terms for developers. The regulator accused the tech giant of preventing app developers from informing consumers about alternative channels for offers and content outside its main app store.

Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk's ( NVO ) weight-loss drug Wegovy helped women with heart disease lose more weight than men with heart disease, according to media reports, which cited an analysis published in a medical journal. Novo Nordisk ( NVO ) shares were down fractionally in Germany.

Elsewhere, Novo Nordisk's ( NVO ) phase 3 study of its experimental therapy, Mim8, showed superior reductions in annualized bleeding rate compared to on-demand and prior prophylaxis treatment in patients with hemophilia A.

Swiss bank UBS (UBS) has agreed to sell most of its stake in the former Credit Suisse's China business to a Chinese government-backed fund, media outlets reported, citing a statement by UBS. The deal values the company at $253.4 million, Bloomberg reported. UBS was up more than 1% in Switzerland.

British pharmaceutical company GSK (GSK) said in a regulatory filing Monday that Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has approved Omjjara to treat myelofibrosis, a rare blood cancer. GSK stock in London was up nearly 1%.
