European Equities Close Mixed in Friday Trading; UK Monthly Retail Sales Fall in May

12:00 PM EDT, 06/20/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The European stock markets closed mixed in Friday trading as Germany's DAX increased 1.17%, France's CAC 40 gained 0.48%, The Stoxx Europe 600 rose 0.1%, while the Swiss Market Index was flat and the FTSE 100 in London was down 0.2%.

Monthly retail sales in the UK dropped 2.7% in May after a revised 1.3% increase in April, according to data from the Office for National Statistics. Analysts expected a 0.5% decline for the month.

The eurozone's consumer confidence index stood at -15.3 points, down from a revised -15.1 points previously, according to European Commission data. The latest reading is lower than the consensus estimate of -14.5 points.

In France, the eurozone's second largest economy, the business climate indicator was unchanged month over month at 96 in June, lower than the index's long-term average of 100, according to data from the country's statistical agency Insee.

And in corporate news, Alphabet's Google suffered a setback after the European Court of Justice's advocate general recommended that the court dismiss the company's appeal to overturn an antitrust fine of 4.12 billion euros ($4.75 billion), the Court of Justice said Thursday. Multiple news outlets reported that the advocate general's opinion is not binding on the court, but judges mostly tend to follow such opinions. Google did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment on the matter.

Apple and Meta Platforms will not face immediate sanctions for failing to comply with the EU's Digital Markets Act, with financial penalties not being applied automatically once the 60-day grace period ends on June 26, an EU spokesperson told Euronews, according to a report Thursday.

A European Commission spokesperson told MT Newswires on Friday that it could not "speculate at this time as regards the fines." Apple and Meta did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' requests for comment.

Meta said WhatsApp's new advertising model will not launch in the EU until 2026, Politico reported Thursday, citing Irish Data Protection Commission Chairperson Des Hogan. Meta did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.

Apollo Global Management is finalizing a deal to provide Electricite de France with as much as 5 billion British pounds ($6.75 billion) of financing for the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant in the UK, Bloomberg reported Friday, citing unnamed sources. Electricite de France declined to comment, while Apollo did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.

Coinbase Global said it has secured a license that allows it to provide crypto products and services in all 27 EU member states.
