European Equities Close Sharply Higher in Monday Trading on Hopes for End to US Government Shutdown

12:22 PM EST, 11/10/2025 (MT Newswires) -- European stock markets surged in Monday trading on investor optimism that the end of the US government shutdown was imminent. The Stoxx Europe 600 climbed 1.42%, Germany's DAX advanced 1.65%, the FTSE 100 rose 1.08%, France's CAC increased 1.32%, and the Swiss Market Index gained 1.28%.

European bank stocks rallied on strong earnings results in Monday trading, as Commerzbank and Deutsche Bank climbed 6.6% and 4.4% respectively on the DAX in Frankfurt while in Paris, Societe Generale and BNP Paribas rose 4.1% and 2.3% respectively, followed by Credit Agricole, which was up 1.7%. And in London, Barclays gained 3.1%, while Lloyds and Standard Chartered advanced 2.6% and 2.1% respectively.

Alvotech said Monday the UK High Court rejected an injunction request by Regeneron and Bayer to block UK manufacturing of AVT06, Alvotech's biosimilar to Eylea. The ruling allows Alvotech and its contract manufacturer to proceed with manufacturing activities for AVT06 in the UK, according to a statement.

After rising nearly 7% in earlier trading, shares of the Icelandic biotech firm closed 1.7% higher on the Nasdaq Iceland.

Spanish lender Banco Santander's shares gained close to 4% in Madrid after UBS raised its price target on the stock to $29 a share from $24. It also reported Monday that its Santander Bank unit is selling seven bank branch locations in Pennsylvania.

British pharmaceutical company Astrazeneca said Sunday that its experimental drug, baxdrostat, intended to treat patients with resistant hypertension, met primary and secondary goals in a phase 3 trial. The drugmaker said baxdrostat demonstrated a statistically significant and clinically meaningful reduction in ambulatory 24-hour average systolic blood pressure compared with placebo at 12 weeks.

Shares of Astrazeneca were up 1.8% in London.

Pengerang Biorefinery, a joint venture among Eni's Enilive unit, Petronas, and Euglena, said Monday that it has held a groundbreaking ceremony for its planned biorefinery in Johor, Malaysia. The facility will have processing capacity of up to 650,000 metric tons of renewable feedstock per year and will focus on producing sustainable aviation fuel, hydrogenated vegetable oil, and bio-naphtha.

Shares of the Italian oil and gas company gained 1.4% in Milan.

Shares of Cellectis surged more than 12% on the Euronext Growth Paris exchange after the French biopharmaceutical company reported late Friday that it swung to a profit in Q3 with earnings of $0.01 per diluted share, which easily beat the $0.23 loss analysts polled by FactSet had expected.
