European Stocks Close Mostly Higher in Thursday Trading; German GDP Decelerates, Bank of England Holds Rates

11:53 AM EDT, 07/30/2026 (MT Newswires) -- European stock markets closed mostly higher in Thursday trading as the Stoxx Europe 600 gained 0.8%, Germany's DAX rose 0.5%, the FTSE 100 slipped 0.2%, France's CAC climbed 0.8%, while the Swiss Market Index declined 0.7%.

German gross domestic product decelerated in Q2, growing 0.2% down from a 0.4% expansion in Q1, according to the Federal Statistical Office.

Analysts polled by Bloomberg expected 0.1% growth.

In the UK, the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee voted 6 to 3 to maintain the Bank Rate at 3.75%. Three members voted to increase the rate to 4%.

"The impact of the energy shock on the UK economy remains uncertain," the Bank of England said in a statement. "Monetary policy cannot influence energy prices but is being set to ensure that the economic adjustment to them occurs in a way that achieves the 2% inflation target sustainably."

In corporate news, Shell reported Q2 adjusted earnings Thursday of $1.76 per diluted share, up from $0.72 a year earlier. Analysts polled by FactSet expected $1.53.

Revenue for the quarter ended June 30 rose to $94.66 billion, up from $65.41 billion a year earlier. Analysts expected $91.89 billion.

Shares of the British oil and gas major were little changed in London.

Stellantis reported Q2 adjusted earnings Thursday of 0.12 euros ($0.14) per diluted share, down from 0.15 euros a year earlier. Analysts polled by FactSet expected 0.24 euros.

Net revenue for the quarter ended June 30 was 43.48 billion euros, compared with 38.45 billion euros a year earlier. Four analysts surveyed by FactSet expected 43.11 billion euros.

For 2026, the company reaffirmed its net revenue growth of mid-single digit percentage. Analysts polled by FactSet expect 162.43 billion euros.

Shares of the automaker dropped 4% in Paris.

Sanofi reported Q2 business earnings Thursday of 2.09 euros ($2.39) per share, up from 1.59 euros a year earlier. Three analysts polled by FactSet expected 1.83 euros.

Net sales for the quarter ended June 30 were $11.60 billion, compared with $9.99 billion a year earlier. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected 11.52 billion euros.

For 2026, the company raised its sales guidance to around 10% from a high single-digit percentage growth. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expect 48.89 billion euros.

Shares of the French pharmaceutical company fell 8.6% in Paris.

ING Groep reported Q2 earnings Thursday of 0.68 euros ($0.78) per share, up from 0.56 euros a year earlier. Three analysts polled by FactSet expected 0.65 euros.

Total income for the quarter ended June 30 was 6.28 billion euros, compared with 5.70 billion euros a year earlier. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected 6.11 billion euros.

For 2026, the lender said it continues to expect total income of 24.5 billion euros. Analysts polled by FactSet expect 24.44 billion euros.

Shares of the Dutch bank advanced 5.4% in Amsterdam.

Lloyds Banking Group reported Q2 earnings Thursday of 0.024 British pounds ($0.03) per diluted share, up from 0.021 pounds a year earlier.

Net income for the quarter ended June 30 was 4.96 billion pounds, up from 4.52 billion pounds a year earlier. Two analysts surveyed by FactSet expected 5.16 billion pounds.

Shares of the British bank rose 4% in London.

ArcelorMittal reported Q2 adjusted earnings early Thursday of $0.90 per diluted share, down from $1.32 a year earlier. Analysts polled by FactSet expected $1.06.

Sales for the quarter that ended June 30 were $16.76 billion, up from $15.93 billion a year earlier. Analysts expected $17.13 billion.

Shares of ArcelorMittal ended the session nearly 3% higher in Paris.

Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria reported Q2 adjusted earnings Thursday of 0.54 euro ($0.62) per diluted share, up from 0.46 euro a year earlier. An analyst polled by FactSet expected 0.53 euro.

Gross income for the quarter ended June 30 was 10.51 billion euros, up from 8.71 billion euros a year earlier. Analysts expected 10.42 billion euros.

Shares of the Spanish bank climbed 5% in Madrid.

Ferrari reported Q2 earnings Thursday of 2.62 euros ($3.00) per diluted share, up from 2.38 euros a year earlier. Analysts polled by FactSet expected 2.50 euros.

Revenue for the quarter ended June 30 was 1.94 billion euros, up from 1.79 billion euros a year earlier. Analysts expected 1.87 billion euros.

The company said it now expects 2026 adjusted diluted EPS of at least 9.68 euros, up from a prior forecast of at least 9.45 euros. Analysts polled by FactSet expect 9.66 euros.

Ferrari also expects net revenue for the year of about 7.60 billion euros, up from a prior forecast of about 7.50 billion euros. Analysts polled by FactSet expect 7.56 billion euros.

Shares of Ferrari gained 1% in Milan.
