Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Edge Higher Pre-Bell Tuesday as Traders Mull Potential Presidential Decisions

08:14 AM EST, 01/21/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) was up 0.4% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) advanced 0.5% in Tuesday's premarket activity as traders mull potential decisions by the new US President.

US stock futures were also higher, with S&P 500 Index futures up 0.4%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures advancing 0.5%, and Nasdaq futures gaining 0.5% before the start of regular trading.

In premarket activity, bitcoin was up by 0.8% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 0.4% lower.

Power Play:

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) advanced 0.3%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) retreated marginally by 0.01% while the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) rose 1.6%. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was inactive.

Nanobiotix ( NBTX ) stock was up 13% premarket after the company said it dosed the first patient in a phase 2 trial testing the experimental drug, JNJ-1900, for stage 3 non-small cell lung cancer.

Winners and Losers:

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) advanced 0.4% and the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) was up 0.3%, while the iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) was inactive.

3M ( MMM ) stock was up 3.2% before the opening bell after the company reported better-than-expected Q4 adjusted earnings and net sales.

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLP ) was up 0.2%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) gained 0.1%. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) was down 0.4%, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLY ) advanced 0.6%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) was inactive, while the SPDR S&P Retail ETF ( XRT ) was 0.1% higher.

D.R. Horton ( DHI ) shares were up 4% pre-bell after the company reported higher-than-expected fiscal Q1 net income and revenue.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) advanced 0.3%, and the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was 0.2% higher, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) was marginally down by 0.03%. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) gained 0.5%, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) rose by 0.7%.

Apple ( AAPL ) shares were down 2% in recent Tuesday premarket activity after Bloomberg reported, citing an independent research firm, that iPhone sales in China fell 18.2% in Q4.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) advanced 1.5%, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLE ) was up by 0.2%.

GeoPark ( GPRK ) stock was up 1.9% before Tuesday's opening bell after the company reported an operational update for Q4 production.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) advanced 0.5%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares ( FAS ) was up 1.5%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares ( FAZ ) was 1.4% lower.

Fifth Third Bancorp ( FITB ) shares were up 1.3% pre-bell Tuesday after the company reported higher Q4 earnings and revenue.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil retreated 2.6% to $75.89 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas fell 2.1% to $3.87 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund ( USO ) was down 2.2%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) was nearly 1% lower.

Gold futures for February retreated 0.5% to $2,734.90 an ounce on the Comex, and silver futures gained 0.2% to reach $31.21 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) advanced by 0.9%, while the iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) was 0.8% higher.
