Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Higher Pre-Bell Monday as Investors Anticipate Key Economic Indicators

08:30 AM EST, 02/10/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) was up 0.5% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) advanced 0.7% in Monday's premarket activity as investors digest recent tariff announcements and focus on upcoming economic data releasing this week.

US stock futures were also higher, with S&P 500 Index futures up 0.5%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures advancing 0.4%, and Nasdaq futures gaining 0.7% before the start of regular trading.

In premarket activity, bitcoin was up by 1.4% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 2.1% higher.

Power Play:

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) was inactive, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLE ) was up by 0.7%.

BP (BP) stock was up 6.4% before Monday's opening bell after Bloomberg News said that Elliott Investment Management amassed a "significant" stake in the company.

Winners and Losers:

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) advanced 0.3%, the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) was flat and the iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) was inactive.

Sun Country Airlines ( SNCY ) stock was down 4.2% before the opening bell after the company said it plans to repurchase $10 million worth of shares in a secondary offering of roughly 6.3 million shares.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) advanced 0.2%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares ( FAS ) was up 0.8%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares ( FAZ ) was 0.8% lower.

Charles Schwab ( SCHW ) shares were down 3.2% pre-bell Monday after Toronto-Dominion Bank ( MLWIQXX ) said it plans to sell its entire equity stake in the company. Toronto-Dominion stock was up 1.8%.

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLP ) was up 0.1% while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was inactive. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) was inactive, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLY ) gained 0.1%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) and the SPDR S&P Retail ETF ( XRT ) were inactive.

Playa Hotels & Resorts ( PLYA ) shares were up 2.5% pre-bell after the company said it agreed to be acquired by Hyatt Hotels ( H ) for $13.50 per share in cash. Hyatt stock was 0.5% lower.

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) advanced 0.1%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) gained 0.1% while the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) was flat. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was 0.6% higher.

Royal Philips (PHG) stock was up 1.2% premarket after the company said it is partnering with the World Bank and Ukraine's Ministry of Health to improve stroke and cardiovascular care in Ukraine.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) gained 0.7%, and the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was 1% higher, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) was up 0.1%. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) was inactive, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) rose by 0.4%.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing ( TSM ) shares were up nearly 1.3% in recent Monday premarket activity after the company reported that January revenue increased 5.4% month-over-month and 35.9% from a year earlier.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil gained 1.3% to reach $71.89 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas was up 3.2% at $3.41 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund ( USO ) advanced 1.4%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) was 3.2% higher.

Gold futures for April advanced 1.5% to $2,930.20 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures gained 0.7% to reach $32.68 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) were up 1.6%, and the iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) was 1% higher.
