Israel-Palestine war Live updates: Israeli airstrike flattens high-rise building in central Gaza City

An Israeli airstrike has flattened a high-rise building in central Gaza City. The 14-story Palestine Tower is home to dozens of families. But it also held offices connected to the Hamas and Islamic Jihad militant groups. Israel gave inhabitants a 10-minute warning before it destroyed the building. The Israeli military said that fighting with Hamas is continuing in 22 locations in southern Israel. Tel Aviv must stand on one foot and wait for our earth-shattering response, he said. In past rounds of fighting, Israel has destroyed Gaza high-rises, claiming they were used by militants, but destroying offices and leaving scores of people homeless. That included the building that housed The Associated Press bureau in a 2021 war.

Israel-Palestine war Live updates: 5 things to know about Hamas militant group's unprecedented attack

Without warning on Saturday, Gaza's militant Hamas rulers attacked Israel by air, land and sea. Millions of Israelis in the country's south awoke to the searing sound of incoming rockets and the inevitable thud of impact. Air raid sirens wailed as far north as Tel Aviv. Israel's anti-rocket interceptors thundered in Jerusalem. In an unprecedented escalation, armed Hamas fighters blew up parts of Israel's highly fortified separation fence and strode into Israeli communities along the Gaza frontier, terrorizing residents and trading fire with Israeli soldiers. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his far-right allies were scrambling to respond to the rapidly changing events. Here are some key takeaways from the multi-pronged attack that has suddenly plunged Israel and Gaza into battle.

1. The shock that Israelis felt on Saturday morning — on Simchat Torah, one of the most joyous days of the Jewish calendar — recalled the surprise of the the 1973 Mideast war.

2. Practically 50 years earlier to the day, a full-scale Egyptian-Syrian attack on a Jewish holiday quickly turned into a disaster for an unprepared Israeli military.

3. The question of how the militants were able to stage such a huge and coordinated attack — which has already killed more Israelis than any single assault since the second Palestinian uprising two decades ago.

4. The government's supporters had expected Netanyahu and hard-line ministers with a history of anti-Arab rhetoric like National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir to take a particularly belligerent stance against the Palestinians.

5. As political analysts lambast Netanyahu over the failure, the Israeli PM risks losing control of his government and country.

Israel-Palestine war Live updates: 'Colossal intelligence failure' as Israel caught unguarded

The Saturday morning's surprise and unprecedented attack by air, land and sea by the ruling Hamas militant group in the Gaza Strip in Israel's southern parts is a result of a "colossal failure" of Israel's intelligence, media reports and experts have said. Hamas militants fired more than 2,000 rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israel, according to the Israeli military, while Hamas fighters entered southern Israel by land, sea and air, using paragliders and even captured several Israeli soldiers near the border. At least 70 people have been killed and more than 600 injured in Israel. In the Gaza Strip side, there are 198 deaths and about 1,500 wounded in Israel's counterattack, media reports said. Israel has always prided itself on its intelligence agencies, Shin Bet, the domestic unit, and especially on Mossad, its external spy agency.

However, more than 2,000 rockets as dozens of fighters infiltrated the heavily fortified border in several locations by air, land and sea, catching the country off guard on a major holiday. All this happened despite Israel having one of the strongest militaries in the region, security cameras at the border, personnel from both Shin Bet and Mossad in the field, state-of-the-art thermal imaging/motion sensors and even sophisticated border fencing.

Israel-Palestine war Live updates: 9 Nepalese nationals injured in Hamas attack in Israel

At least nine Nepalese people from Nepal were injured in the terrorist attack by the Hamas militant group in Israel on Saturday, the Nepal government said as it condemned the unprecedented assault and vowed solidarity with Tel Aviv. The Nepali government has strongly condemned the "loss of precious human life" in the attack that also "injured many more”, said a statement issued Nepali Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “At this critical hour, we convey our solidarity with the government of Israel,” the statement said. When the Islamist group Hamas launched an attack in Israel, nine Nepalese were injured, two of them seriously, according to a Ministry of Foreign Affairs official. “We have been informed that a farm where 14 Nepalese were working was also under attack, nine of the Nepalese have been reported injured while two of them are in serious condition,” the ministry said.

Israel-Palestine conflict Live updates: Hamas holding 'dozens' of Israeli soldiers captive in the Gaza Strip

The Hamas militant group says it is holding “dozens” of Israeli soldiers captive in the Gaza Strip. Abu Obeida, spokesman for the group's military wing, said the soldiers, including some officers, were captured during a surprise infiltration into southern Israel on Saturday.

He said the captives were being held in “safe places” and militant tunnels.

If true, the claim could set the stage for complicated negotiations on a prisoner swap with Israel, which is holding thousands of Palestinians in its prisons.

Israel in the past has agreed to lopsided exchanges in order to bring captive soldiers home.

Israel-Palestine conflict Live updates: Hamas surprise attack out of Gaza stuns Israel

Backed by a barrage of rockets, dozens of Hamas militants broke out of the blockaded Gaza Strip and into nearby Israeli towns, killing dozens and abducting others in an unprecedented surprise early morning attack during a major Jewish holiday Saturday.

A stunned Israel launched airstrikes in Gaza, with its prime minister saying the country is now at war with Hamas and vowing to inflict an “unprecedented price.” In an assault of startling breadth, Hamas gunmen rolled into as many as 22 locations outside the Gaza Strip, including towns and other communities as far as 15 miles (24 kilometres) from the Gaza border. In some places, they roamed for hours, gunning down civilians and soldiers as Israel's military scrambled to muster a response. Gunbattles continued well after nightfall, and militants held hostages in standoffs in two towns and occupied a police station in a third.

Israeli media, citing rescue service officials, said at least 250 people were killed and 1,500 wounded, making it the deadliest attack in Israel in decades. At least 232 people in the Gaza Strip have been killed and at least 1,700 wounded in Israeli strikes, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.
