Political Uncertainty Caps European Bourses Midday
Jun 17, 2024 5:06 AM

07:57 AM EDT, 06/17/2024 (MT Newswires) -- European bourses edged sideways midday Monday as traders assessed values after last week's sell-offs and digested the changing face of European politics.

French exchanges moved into the green, possibly responding to moderate comments made by Marine Le Pen, leader of the rising National Rally party.

Tech and bank stocks gained, while property and retail shares lagged.

Investors also eyed Wall Street futures signaling red and lower closes overnight on Asian exchanges.

Switzerland's economy will expand by an estimated 1.2% in 2024, a "below average" increase, the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs said.

The pan-continental Stoxx Europe 600 Index was off 0.3% mid-session.

The Stoxx Europe 600 Technology Index was up 0.7%, and the Stoxx 600 Banks Index was 0.4% higher.

The Stoxx Europe 600 Oil and Gas Index gained 0.1%, while the Stoxx 600 Europe Food and Beverage Index declined 0.4%.

The REITE, a European REIT index, was down 0.3%, and the Stoxx Europe 600 Retail Index was 0.2% lower.

On the national market indexes, Germany's DAX was up 0.2%, and the FTSE 100 in London was flat. The CAC 40 in Paris was up 0.3%, but Spain's IBEX 35 lost 0.4%.

Yields on benchmark 10-year German bonds were higher, near 2.4%.

Front-month North Sea Brent crude oil futures were up 0.1% at $82.72 per barrel.

The Euro Stoxx 50 volatility index was up 2.5% at 20.37 indicating modestly above-average volatility for European stock markets in the next 30 days, a negative signal. A reading above 20 indicates choppier markets ahead, while below 20 suggests calmer exchanges. The last time the index logged above 20 was in October of 2023.
