Stocks Decline Pre-Bell as Investors Assess Waning Earnings Season; Asia, Europe Fall

07:13 AM EDT, 05/29/2024 (MT Newswires) -- US equity futures were tracking in the red before Wednesday's open as traders digest the waning earnings season.

The S&P 500 futures, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nasdaq all declined 0.6% each in the premarket. The majority of Asian exchanges were pointing lower while European bourses were trending south midday on the continent.

American Airlines ( AAL ) shares dropped 8.6% pre-bell after the air carrier cut its second-quarter outlook and announced its chief commercial officer will step down in June. Robinhood Markets ( HOOD ) gained 3.5% as the retail brokerage disclosed a $1 billion share repurchase program. Nvidia ( NVDA ) edged down 0.4% after climbing nearly 7% at the close of Tuesday's session.

Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS), Viking (VIK), Abercrombie & Fitch ( ANF ) , Chewy (CHWY), American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) and Advance Auto Parts ( AAP ) are scheduled to release their latest financial results early Wednesday, among others. Salesforce ( CRM ) , Agilent Technologies ( A ) and HP (HPQ) post earnings in the afterhours.

On the economic calendar, the weekly mortgage applications bulletin is out at 7 am ET, followed by the Richmond Federal Reserve Manufacturing Index for May at 10 am. The Atlanta Fed Survey of Business Uncertainty for this month is due at 11 am, while the Beige Book, a compilation of economic and business reports from the 12 regional Fed branches, posts at 2 pm.

Federal Reserve Bank of New York President John Williams is slated to speak at 1:45 pm, while Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic speaks at 7 pm.

Before the opening bell, bitcoin traded down 0.7% at $67,842 West Texas Intermediate crude rose 0.8% to $80.47 a barrel, yields on 10-year Treasuries increased by 2 basis points to 4.57% and gold declined 0.5% to $2,367 an ounce.
