Stocks Mostly Down Pre-Bell as Investors Assess Trump's Auto Tariff Announcement; Asia Up, Europe Down

07:19 AM EDT, 03/27/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The main US stock measures were mostly tracking in the red before Thursday's opening bell as traders digest President Donald Trump's decision to impose 25% tariffs on automobile imports.

Standard & Poor's 500 slipped 0.1% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.2%, while the Nasdaq nudged 0.1% lower in premarket activity. Asian exchanges were mostly pointing higher, while European bourses were tracking in the red midday on the continent.

Shares of US auto giants General Motors ( GM ) and Ford Motor ( F ) dropped 6.4% and 2.6%, respectively, following Trump's tariff announcement. The US-listed stock of Chrysler and Jeep parent Stellantis ( STLA ) declined 1.7%.

Jefferies Financial ( JEF ) fell 5% as it reported its fiscal first-quarter results. Petco Health & Wellness (WOOF) jumped more than 10% following the pet store chain's latest quarterly statement.

On the economic calendar, the final estimate for the fourth-quarter gross domestic product posts at 8:30 am ET, along with the international trade in goods, retail inventories and wholesale inventories reports for February, the weekly jobless claims bulletin and the fourth-quarter corporate profits data.

The National Association of Realtors pending home sales index for last month is due at 10 am, followed by the weekly EIA natural-gas supplies report at 10:30 am. The Kansas City Federal Reserve's manufacturing index for March is out at 11 am.

Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin and Boston Fed President Susan Collins are both scheduled to speak at 4:30 pm.

TD Synnex ( SNX ) , Ascentage Pharma (AAPG) and Winnebago Industries ( WGO ) report their latest financial results before the bell, among others. Lululemon Athletica ( LULU ) , Braze (BRZE) and AAR (AIR) release earnings after markets close.

Before the opening bell, bitcoin gained 0.8% to $87,127, West Texas Intermediate crude oil ticked down 0.1% to $69.56 a barrel, yields on 10-year Treasuries advanced 5.1 basis points to 4.39% and gold increased 1.3% to $3,093 an ounce.
