Stocks Mostly Down Pre-Bell as Investors Parse Nvidia's Latest Quarterly Results
Aug 28, 2025 4:57 AM

07:26 AM EDT, 08/28/2025 (MT Newswires) -- US equity markets were mostly trending lower before Thursday's opening bell as traders digest tech bellwether Nvidia's ( NVDA ) latest financial results.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq were slightly in the red in premarket activity, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.2%. The indexes finished higher for the second consecutive trading session on Wednesday.

Nvidia ( NVDA ) reported fiscal second-quarter results late Wednesday above market estimates, as the chipmaker benefited from rising generative artificial intelligence demand. However, shares of the company declined 1.9% pre-bell as investors raised concerns about its key data center segment, which recorded revenue below Wall Street's expectations.

The tech giant also said it made no sales of its H20 graphics processing units to customers in China in the second quarter. Earlier in August, Nvidia ( NVDA ) reportedly agreed to give 15% of its artificial intelligence chip sales in China to the US government, as part of a deal to get export licenses.

"Investors will focus on (Nvidia's ( NVDA )) sales results and guidance, which were both slightly below buyside expectations," Truist Securities said in a Wednesday client note. Nvidia ( NVDA ) expects third-quarter revenue of $54 billion, plus or minus 2%.

CrowdStrike ( CRWD ) fell 3.4% early Thursday as the cybersecurity firm issued a revenue outlook below initial market estimates for the ongoing three-month period. Snowflake (SNOW) jumped 14% as the cloud-based data platform company lifted its full-year product revenue outlook. Veeva Systems ( VEEV ) dropped 3.9% while HP (HPQ) slipped 1.5% following their quarterly earnings.

Li Auto ( LI ) , Dollar General ( DG ) , Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS), Burlington Stores ( BURL ) , Hormel Foods ( HRL ) , Best Buy ( BBY ) , Brown Forman (BF.A, BF.B), Ollie's Bargain Outlet (OLLI) and Bath & Body Works ( BBWI ) are scheduled to report their latest financial results before the bell, among others.

Dell Technologies ( DELL ) , Marvell Technology ( MRVL ) and Ulta Beauty ( ULTA ) release earnings after the markets close.

Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook should go on leave even as she intends to legally challenge US President Donald Trump's move to fire her, Trump's top economic adviser Kevin Hassett said, CNBC reported Wednesday. Trump recently informed Cook that he had determined "sufficient cause" to remove her from the central bank's board of governors.

The two-year US Treasury yield remained unchanged at 3.62% in premarket action, while the 10-year rate slipped 0.6 basis points to 4.23%.

The second estimate for the second-quarter gross domestic product posts at 8:30 am ET. Last month, an advance estimate released by the government showed that real gross domestic product in the world's largest economy increased at an annual rate of 3% in the June quarter.

Thursday's economic calendar also has the weekly jobless claims bulletin and the pending home sales index for July. Fed Governor Christopher Waller is slated to speak at 6 pm.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil retreated 0.6% to $63.77 a barrel before the open. Commercial crude stockpiles in the US shrank more than expected last week, according to government data on Wednesday.

Gold nudged up 0.2% to $3,454 per troy ounce, while bitcoin inclined 0.9% to $113,018.
