In economic news, boosted by capital outlays, Japan's gross domestic product (GDP) expanded by a seasonally adjusted 0.4% in the fourth quarter, a swing from the preliminary 0.4% projected shrinkage announced last month, reported the Cabinet Office.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index opened higher and rose to the close, closing up 1.4% as Beijing reported consumer prices may have existed deflation, possibly signaling economic growth.

The broad gauge Hang Seng rose 234.18 to 16,587.57, as gaining issues outnumbered losers 65 to 14. The Hang Seng TECH Index gained 2.5% on the day, while the Mainland Properties Index rose 1.8%.

On the mainland, the Shanghai Composite rose 0.7% to 3,068.46.

In economic news, mainland China's consumer price index (CPI) edged up 0.7% on year in February, a swing from the 0.8% on-year decline recorded in January, the National Bureau of Statistics reported on Saturday.
