Update: China's Xi Urges Trump to Avoid Restrictive Trade Measures in Call

12:33 PM EDT, 09/19/2025 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with additional details throughout the story.)

Chinese President Xi Jinping urged US President Donald Trump to refrain from imposing restrictive trade measures during a call Friday, as the leaders of the world's two largest economies sought to ease tensions, according to China's official Xinhua News Agency.

Xi told Trump that Beijing respects the wishes of businesses and hopes to see a resolution on the sale of TikTok's US operations by its parent company, ByteDance, Bloomberg reported, adding that the Chinese leader urged Washington to provide a fair environment for Chinese businesses operating in the US.

The leaders' first call since June focused on the TikTok deal and extending a trade agreement to ease tariffs, against the backdrop of a US-China standoff affecting semiconductors and rare earths, the report said.

The call also took place amid geopolitical tensions over China's stance on Taiwan, its economic ties to Russia during the Ukraine war, and its role in producing chemicals used to make fentanyl, according to the report.
