The Dow Jones Industrial Average, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite were down after midday trading Tuesday as the Federal Reserve's Federal Open Market Committee commenced its two-day meeting to discuss the future path of interest rates.
In company news, Apple ( AAPL ) shares hit an all-time high on Tuesday, a day after the company announced several new products, features and a partnership with OpenAI. Apple ( AAPL ) shares rose as much as 6.5% to $205.72 a share, resulting in a market capitalization of around $3.156 trillion. Additionally, Apple ( AAPL ) announced Tuesday that Affirm Holdings' (AFRM) payment products will be accessible to Apple Pay users in the US later this year, enabling pay-over-time options for purchases.
General Motors ( GM ) said Tuesday its board of directors approved a new $6 billion share repurchase program. The company launched a $10 billion accelerated buyback program in November 2023, with about $1.4 billion in remaining capacity under its previous share repurchase authorization. The company said it repurchased $300 million of its shares during Q1 and expects to exhaust the remaining $1.1 billion of the previous authorization before the end of Q2. Shares of GM were up 2.2%.
The rollout of Tesla's (TSLA) robo-taxis is likely "some years away" as the company expects to augment an expected limited supply of private vehicles with a dedicated robo-taxi vehicle that will likely be based on Tesla's delayed next-generation platform, JPMorgan Analyst Ryan Brinkman and his team wrote in a note to clients. Tesla shares were down 3.2%.
Boeing ( BA ) delivered 24 airplanes in May, matching its total from April, the company said Tuesday. Meanwhile, Boeing's ( BA ) rival, Airbus, made 53 deliveries in May. Boeing ( BA ) shares were down 3.8%.
The Republican-led House Judiciary Committee will accuse large Wall Street firms on Tuesday of colluding with advocacy groups to force companies to cut back on their greenhouse gas emissions, Reuters reported, citing a report it saw before its publication. The Judiciary Committee's report called BlackRock ( BLK ) , Vanguard and State Street (STT) -- calling them members of the "climate cartel," according to Reuters. Shares of BlackRock ( BLK ) and State Street were down 1.4% and 4.4%, respectively.
The European Union is set to delay the implementation of rules impacting banks' trading businesses by one year since those activities are global in nature and the bloc's lenders would be disadvantaged by the ongoing wrangling over rules adoption in the US, Bloomberg reported Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter. Shares of Deutsche Bank ( DB ) , UBS (UBS) and Banco Santander (SAN), were down 3.5%, 1.5% and 2.7%, respectively.
Mastercard ( MA ) will no longer require Europeans to enter in their card numbers manually when checking out online starting in 2030, CNBC reported Tuesday. A randomly-generated "token" will replace the traditional 16-digit card entry, no matter what platform or device the customer is using, according to the report. Shares of Mastercard ( MA ) were down 0.6% after noon.
