07:16 AM EDT, 09/25/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Canadian population growth remains strongest in Alberta at 2.4% year over year, but has slowed to below 1% in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia, according to Bank of Montreal (BMO).
While all provinces continue to attract permanent residents as planned, adding between 0.5 and 1.4 percentage points (ppt) to growth-outflows of non-permanent residents (NPRs) are proving to be the biggest drag in B.C. and Ontario, the bank said.
This trend was anticipated by BMO, given that those provinces experienced the sharpest run-up during the recent boom and now have the most elevated NPR shares compared with the national 5% target.
These trends have become more pronounced in the latest two quarters, and will continue to do so, as these numbers are still flattered by gains in the second half of 2024, according to the bank.
Canadians also continue to have very few babies, adding barely 0.1 ppt to population growth in the past year, added BMO.
