06:50 AM EDT, 10/21/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Alcoa ( AA ) said Monday it secured both US and Australian government support to advance a gallium plant at its Wagerup alumina refinery in Western Australia.
Under a nonbinding deal, the US and Australian governments and Alcoa ( AA ) will fund a special purpose vehicle and receive gallium offtake in proportion to their interests, the company said.
The vehicle would partner with JAGA, a joint venture between the Japanese government and Sojitz, to build a plant operated by Alcoa ( AA ) and expected to produce 100 metric tons a year, it said.
Funding will cover final feasibility work and construction, with definitive agreements to be prepared among the governments of the US, Australia, and Japan with Alcoa ( AA ) and Sojitz, it added.
Alcoa ( AA ) will work with the Western Australian state government on approvals, and the parties target a 2026 final investment decision and production, it said.
