Alphabet's Google Under Investigation by Indian Antitrust Body Over In-App Billing Dispute
Mar 15, 2024 9:35 AM

12:22 PM EDT, 03/15/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOG) Google ( GOOG ) unit is being investigated by the Competition Commission of India regarding an ongoing dispute with Indian startups over its in-app billing system, according to media reports Friday.

Indian startups have complained about Google's ( GOOG ) policies, which were allegedly implemented in a "discriminatory manner," Reuters reported.

The regulator decided to launch the investigation following complaints that Google Play Store's updated payment policies allegedly violate the country's competition law, news agency Press Trust of India reported.

Earlier in March, Google ( GOOG ) removed more than 100 Indian apps from its app store for violations related to billing, though it restored them after the Indian government intervened, according to Reuters.

Representatives for Google ( GOOG ) did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
