12:25 PM EDT, 06/07/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Amazon.com's ( AMZN ) relationship with its delivery drivers is under scrutiny by 20 US senators, who are seeking additional information from the company in letter dated Thursday as they continue probing alleged shortcomings on workers' rights and safety.
The letter to Chief Executive Andy Jassy expressed the lawmakers' dissatisfaction over Amazon's ( AMZN ) earlier response to their concerns with the "mistreatment" of workers in the company's Delivery Service Partner program. The bipartisan group of senators asked Amazon ( AMZN ) to provide responses to their questions by July 5.
The senators said Amazon's ( AMZN ) Feb. 9 response to their concerns "included answers that appear to be self-contradictory and at odds with publicly available data and reporting" and also "included statements that are not responsive to the questions asked."
"Amazon's ( AMZN ) assertion that it does not act as an employer for DSP employees contradicts evidence indicating its considerable control over workers' employment conditions," the letter said. "Amazon's ( AMZN ) use of AI-powered surveillance cameras in delivery vans and its mandate that DSP drivers in the US sign biometric consent forms under threat of job loss further demonstrate the control the company has over individual DSP drivers."
However, an Amazon ( AMZN ) spokesperson said Friday in a statement to MT Newswires that DSPs are "independent businesses" that are free to work for other companies, adding that drivers maintain their own safety logs and provide the required information directly to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
"This letter is wrong on the facts, and shows the [Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee] continues to be intentionally misled," the statement said. "We've been, and will continue to be transparent when it comes to the safety and health of our employees, partners, and communities."
