07:44 AM EDT, 05/22/2024 (MT Newswires) -- ArcelorMittal ( MT ) and partners Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, BHP (BHP), and Mitsubishi Development have launched a pilot carbon capture unit at the ArcelorMittal Gent plant in Belgium, BHP said Wednesday.
The unit will operate for one to two years, testing the feasibility of capturing a significant portion of the plant's carbon dioxide emissions.
The trial will involve two phases. The first will capture 300 kilograms of carbon dioxide daily from blast furnace top gas, and the second will test carbon dioxide capture from the hot strip mill reheating furnace off-gases, which include coke gas, blast furnace gases, and natural gas, BHP said.
Shares of ArcelorMittal ( MT ) were down 1.6% in recent Wednesday premarket activity.
