Boeing Reportedly Under DOJ Investigation Over Potential Breach of 2021 Settlement
Mar 11, 2024 12:20 PM

02:52 PM EDT, 03/11/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Boeing ( BA ) is under investigation by the US Department of Justice determining whether the door blowout on its 737 Max jetliner on the Alaska Air Group ( ALK ) flight in January violated the terms of a 2021 settlement, according to media reports.

The aviation company in 2021 agreed to pay $2.5 billion and strengthen its compliance program to avoid criminal prosecution over two 737 Max crashes found to be caused by a software system that its technical pilots reportedly deceived federal safety regulators about.

The Justice Department has contacted Alaska Airlines and some crew on the Jan. 5 flight as part of its investigation.

"In an event like this, it's normal for the DOJ to be conducting an investigation. We are fully cooperating and do not believe we are a target of the investigation," Alaska Airlines was quoted by several media outlets.

Boeing ( BA ), Alaska Airlines and the Justice Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment by MT Newswires.

Boeing ( BA ) shares were down 3% in recent Monday trading. Alaska Air Group ( ALK ) was up 2%.
