Canada Nears Free Trade Pact With ASEAN, Says Prime Minister Carney
Oct 27, 2025 3:19 AM

06:02 AM EDT, 10/27/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said his country is working to finalize a new free trade agreement with the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

This partnership would create "huge opportunities" for workers and businesses on both sides of the Pacific, said Carney in comments on Sunday from his official LinkedIn account.

South-East Asia is a rapidly growing, $5 trillion economy, added the prime minister.

Over the weekend, Carney was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to attend the ASEAN summit.

The Canadian prime minister will then stop over in Singapore to meet with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong before participating in the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference in South Korea.
