Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Lower Pre-Bell Monday Amid Heightened Geopolitical Tensions

08:25 AM EDT, 06/23/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) was down 0.2% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) retreated 0.2% in Monday's premarket activity amid heightened geopolitical tension after US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

US stock futures were also lower, with S&P 500 Index futures down 0.1%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipping 0.1%, and Nasdaq futures retreating 0.2% before the start of regular trading.

The S&P Global US PMI composite flash report for June will be released at 9:45 am ET, followed by the May existing home sales bulletin at 10 am ET.

Federal Reserve Governor Michelle Bowman, Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee and Governor Adriana Kugler speak later in the day.

In premarket action, bitcoin was up by 2.4% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 2% lower.

Power Play:

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) retreated 0.3%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) was flat while the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) was flat. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) gained 0.4%.

Exelixis ( EXEL ) stock was up more than 26% premarket after the company said Sunday that a phase 3 trial showed a "statistically significant" overall survival versus regorafenib in the combination of zanzalintinib and atezolizumab in patients with a type of metastatic colorectal cancer.

Winners and Losers:

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) retreated 0.2%, and the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was 0.2% lower, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) was down 0.1%. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) was inactive, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) was 0.4% lower.

Super Micro Computer ( SMCI ) shares were down nearly 5% in recent Monday premarket activity after the company said it intends to offer $2 billion worth of convertible senior notes due June 15, 2030.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) retreated 0.2%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares ( FAS ) was down 0.8%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares ( FAZ ) was 0.3% higher.

Northern Trust ( NTRS ) shares were up 4% pre-bell Monday after The Wall Street Journal reported that Bank of New York Mellon ( BK ) recently approached Northern to express interest in a potential merger between the companies.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) was up 1.1%, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLE ) was up by 0.6%.

Golar LNG (GLNG) stock was up 2% before Monday's opening bell after the company said that the floating liquefied natural gas vessel, FLNG Gimi, has reached the commercial operations date for its 20-year lease and operate agreement on the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim project offshore Mauritania and Senegal.

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLP ) gained marginally by 0.04%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was up 1.2%. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) was down 0.2%, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLY ) lost 0.1%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) was inactive, while the SPDR S&P Retail ETF ( XRT ) was also inactive.

Toyota Motor ( TM ) shares were down 1% pre-bell after news outlets reported that the company will increase prices for some vehicles sold in the US by an average of $270 starting next month.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) advanced marginally by 0.04%. The Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) retreated 0.01%, while the iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) was inactive.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil gained by 0.8% to reach $74.42 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas was up 0.6% at $3.87 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund ( USO ) was 0.6% higher, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) increased by 1%.

Gold futures for August gained 0.2% to reach $3,393.80 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures increased by 0.3% to $36.45 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) advanced up 0.4%, and the iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) was 0.5% higher.
