03:48 PM EST, 12/17/2024 (MT Newswires) -- A group of US lawmakers urged President Joe Biden Tuesday to block Nippon Steel's $14.1 billion acquisition of United States Steel ( X ) , citing national security concerns and potential threats to viability of American steel manufacturing.
In a letter signed by 29 lawmakers, led by Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Ohio, and Rep. Chris Deluzio, D-Pennsylvania, the group emphasized the importance of domestic steel production to national security and the US economy, and pointed to Nippon Steel's past trade practices, including allegations of dumping steel products in the US market, as a major concern.
The letter follows the ongoing review of the deal by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US, with preliminary findings raising concerns about Nippon Steel's commitments to US steel manufacturing, which lawmakers say lack "enforceable commitments."
The lawmakers are calling on Biden to block the deal before the conclusion of the committee's third 90-day review period, ending on Dec. 22.
