This is a gold buying season but in the past few days, there were reports of over-billing for gold. Customers also raised doubt about the purity and weight of the precious metal.

HL Upendar, deputy director general, consumer affairs, BIS, said consumers should look for symbols of hallmark while buying gold.

On purity of gold, Upendar said, “The only way gold can get purer is to ensure that one buys hallmark jewellery. For this, the consumers have to get more aware, have to ensure that they insist for hallmark jewellery. There is no other way one can do it.”
