02:47 PM EDT, 06/18/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Malaysia is investigating a Chinese firm in the country said to be training large language models using Nvidia ( NVDA ) and AI chips, multiple media outlets reported Wednesday, citing a statement from Malaysia's Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry.
The ministry "is still in the process of verifying the matter with relevant agencies if any domestic law or regulation has been breached," the statement said, according to the outlets.
The Wall Street Journal had earlier reported that Chinese engineers had bypassed US chip curbs by flying into Malaysia with hard drives, aiming to build AI models in data centers containing servers with advanced Nvidia ( NVDA ) chips, according to the reports.
The ministry did not immediately reply to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
