03:24 PM EST, 02/05/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Amazon.com ( AMZN ) is preparing to launch a major upgrade to Alexa with generative AI capabilities, aiming to enhance conversational abilities and user interaction, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing three people familiar with the situation.

Amazon ( AMZN ) will make a final decision on Alexa's generative AI revamp readiness at a Feb. 14 meeting and plans to preview the service at a press event on Feb. 26 in New York, led by devices chief Panos Panay, Reuters said. An Amazon ( AMZN ) spokesperson said the event is focused on Alexa and declined to elaborate, the report said.

The upgrade aims to convert users into paying customers, though it will initially launch for free to a limited group, Reuters said. Amazon ( AMZN ) will continue offering the current Classic Alexa for free but has stopped adding new features, one of the people said, according to the report.
