02:28 PM EDT, 07/16/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Canada is moving to shore up its steel industry amid U.S. President Donald Trump's trade wars, as BNN Bloomberg reported Prime Minister Mark Carney is raising tariffs on some countries and tariff-free quota volumes.
Countries that do not have a free-trade agreement with Canada will see tariffs on steel imports doubling to 100%, a list that includes China, Taiwan, Turkiye, India, Brazil, among others.
It is also raising tariffs on products from countries outside of the United States that contain steel from China. Carney is also "a tariff rate quota for non-U.S. countries with which it has a trade agreement", the report said.
"We have the potential to become our own best customer for steel, but we will lose that ability if we don't manage the profound transformation now underway in the industry, and to do that, we have to change the way we do things so we can better support our companies and our workers during this time of change," Carney said in the story.
