07:04 AM EDT, 07/03/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The European Commission reportedly plans to impose customs duties on cheap goods from China's online retailers like Temu, AliExpress, and Shein to curb the influx of substandard items entering the bloc, the Financial Times reported Wednesday, citing three people briefed on the matter.
The sources said the Commission will propose eliminating a current 150 euro ($161) threshold that exempts items from customs duties.
The new rules would apply to online retailers shipping directly to EU customers from outside the bloc, therefore Temu, AliExpress, and Shein would be affected. Amazon typically uses European sellers, the report said.
The commission is also considering requiring large platforms to register for VAT payments online, regardless of the value of the goods.
A spokesperson for Shein told Reuters the company is "fully supportive of efforts by lawmakers to reform the de minimis provision."
Alibaba ( BABA ) and PDD Holdings ( PDD ) did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
