Market Chatter: Google Refuses to Add Fact Checks to Search Results, YouTube Videos Despite New EU Law
Jan 16, 2025 8:46 AM

11:17 AM EST, 01/16/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) unit has informed the European Commission that it will not add fact checks to its search results or YouTube ( GOOG ) videos, despite a new law that requires such measures, Axios reported Thursday, citing a letter by Google ( GOOG ).

In a letter by Google's ( GOOG ) Global Affairs President Kent Walker to the Deputy Director General at the Commission's content and technology division Renate Nikolay, Walker reportedly explained that fact-checking isn't "appropriate or effective" for Google's ( GOOG ) services.

Walker asserted that Google's ( GOOG ) current content moderation already works, citing success during last year's global elections, Axios reported. Walker highlighted a new YouTube ( GOOG ) feature that lets certain users add contextual notes to videos, saying it holds "significant potential."

Walker stated Google ( GOOG ) previously told the Commission it wouldn't comply with the code and plans to withdraw from fact-checking commitments before the code takes effect under the Digital Services Act, according to Axios.

Walker also said that Google ( GOOG ) will continue investing in its existing content moderation methods, which focus on providing users with additional information, including Synth ID watermarking and AI disclosures on YouTube ( GOOG ), according to the report.

Google ( GOOG ) and the European Commission did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' requests for a comment.
