10:58 AM EDT, 09/17/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) will go back to the drawing board regarding plans to construct a $200 million data center in Chile's capital, which have sparked environment concerns, Reuters reported Tuesday.
Google ( GOOG ) "will not continue with the process of requesting permits for the project to install a data center in the Cerrillos neighborhood, as originally submitted and approved in 2020," the report quoted the company as having informed Chile's environmental regulator.
"In due course, a new process will begin from scratch for a project that will use air-cooled technology at this very location," the company said in a statement, according to the report.
The project has sparked worries among residents and local officials over the possible impact on Santiago's aquifer, as the data servers will require huge volumes of water for cooling, the report said.
Google ( GOOG ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
