12:45 PM EDT, 06/25/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Microsoft ( MSFT ) is being sued by a group of authors for alleged use of their books without permission to train the tech giant's Megatron artificial intelligence model, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing a complaint filed in New York federal court Tuesday.
Kai Bird, Jia Tolentino, Daniel Okrent and several others accused the company of using pirated digital versions of their books to train its AI to reply to human prompts, the report said.
The complaint said the company used a dataset of almost 200,000 pirated books "to generate a wide range of expression that mimics the syntax, voice, and themes of the copyrighted works on which [the computer model] was trained," according to the report.
The authors asked the court to block the company's infringement and up to $150,000 in statutory damages for each work that the company allegedly misused, the report said.
Microsoft ( MSFT ) representatives didn't immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment, while an attorney for the authors declined to comment, according to the report.
