Market Chatter: Microsoft-backed OpenAI to be Exclusively Served by Stargate
Jan 24, 2025 3:55 AM

06:34 AM EST, 01/24/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Microsoft ( MSFT ) -backed OpenAI's ChatGPT will exclusively be served by Stargate, a high-profile artificial intelligence infrastructure project lauded by President Donald Trump this week, The Financial Times reported Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The venture plans to spend $100 billion on big tech infrastructure projects, rising up to $500 billion over the next four years, FT said, citing Stargate's two main backers, OpenAI and SoftBank. Oracle (ORCL) and Abu Dhabi state AI fund MGX are also founding partners, according to the report.

However, Stargate has not yet secured the funding it requires and will receive no government financing, according to people familiar with the initiative. Another person close to the project said it was far from a fully developed plan.

SoftBank and OpenAI plan to put forward over $15 billion each for the project through a combination of equity from their existing backers and debt to fund Stargate, with SoftBank also injecting existing funds, one of the people said.

OpenAI and Oracle did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment on the matter. SoftBank could not immediately be reached.
