08:57 AM EST, 01/10/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Microsoft ( MSFT )-backed (MSFT) OpenAI is facing a call by Tesla (TSLA) Chief Executive Elon Musk to auction off a major stake in its business to decide the fair value of its charitable assets during its corporate restructuring, Reuters reported Thursday, citing unnamed sources.
In a letter sent to attorneys general in California and Delaware, Musk's lawyer argues that OpenAI should allow competitive bidding for its charitable assets to "protect the public's beneficial interest," the report said.
OpenAI wants to remove its non-profit division's control over its for-profit business by separating the two but seeks to value its charitable assets using financial experts, according to the report.
Musk, who owns AI startup xAI and holds a stake in OpenAI, is seeking to block the restructuring, the report added.
OpenAI, Microsoft ( MSFT ), and Tesla did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.
