06:41 AM EDT, 06/04/2024 (MT Newswires) -- New York state lawmakers have reached a tentative agreement on a bill that would prohibit social media companies from using algorithms to steer content to children without parental consent, The Wall Street Journal reported late Monday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The bill is designed to prevent social media companies from serving automated feeds to minors, which critics claim lead children to violent and sexually explicit content, the report said.
The new measure prohibits social-media platforms from sending minors notifications without parental consent during overnight hours.
New York state Senate and Assembly are set to vote on the measure this week.
