09:02 AM EDT, 06/27/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Novo Nordisk ( NVO ) intends to launch Wegovy on a limited basis in China soon, Bloomberg reported Thursday, citing the company's chief of international operations, Maziar Mike Doustdar.

The Danish drugmaker will initially restrict access to the obesity treatment to prevent the depletion of supply for other parts of the world, the report quoted Doustdar as saying in an interview.

The company also wants to make sure that patients can keep filling their prescriptions without worrying about supplies running out later, the report said.

China approved Wegovy for long-term weight management Tuesday.

"We will supply Wegovy after its launch in China in an effective and planned manner to ensure the continuity of care for patients," Novo Nordisk ( NVO ) said in a statement sent to MT Newswires Thursday.
