05:03 PM EDT, 06/26/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Uber Technologies ( UBER ) is in talks with Travis Kalanick, the ride-hailing company's co-founder, to help fund his acquisition of the US subsidiary of a Chinese autonomous vehicle company, two people with knowledge of the matter told the New York Times.
The company, Pony.ai, was founded in Silicon Valley in 2016 but has its main presence in China, and has permits to operate robot taxis and trucks in the United States and China, the news report said Thursday.
Kalanick will run Pony if the deal is completed, the two sources told the Times. It is unclear what role, if any, Uber ( UBER ) would take in Pony as an investor, the news report said.
Financial details of the potential transaction could not be determined, the NYT report added.
Uber ( UBER ) did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment from MTNewires late Thursday.
