08:04 AM EST, 11/15/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Unilever ( UL ) has scaled back its planned job cuts in Europe to 1,700 from the initial 3,200 and will hire about 1,000 employees for its soon-to-be-spun-off ice cream business, Reuters reported Friday, citing Hermann Soggeberg, chairman of the company's European Works Council.
The job cuts were part of a broader global downsizing, announced earlier this year, to save nearly 800 million euros ($845.7 million), the report said. The adjustments to European job cuts come as part of ongoing negotiations, with Unilever ( UL ) meeting its cost-saving targets by reducing external hiring and implementing savings projects, Reuters said.
Soggeberg told Reuters that Unilever's ( UL ) European ice cream company will create approximately 1,000 additional jobs, primarily for employees impacted by job cuts in other parts of the business.
Unilever ( UL ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
