02:03 PM EDT, 10/02/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms ( META ) has been ordered by a Dutch court to make it easier for Facebook and Instagram users to choose a timeline not based on profiling, the court said Thursday.
The court ruled that the current structure of Facebook and Instagram is not in line with the EU's Digital Services Act, or DSA in some areas.
It said Meta Ireland must adjust its platforms within two weeks, noting that Facebook and Instagram currently don't sufficiently enable Dutch citizens to make free choices about the use of profiled recommendation systems.
The court also said it ordered Meta Ireland to ensure that the choice for a chronological timeline is maintained so that users don't have to reset it each time.
The company disagrees with the decision and will appeal, a Meta spokesperson said in a statement emailed to MT Newswires.
"[We] notified users in the Netherlands about how they can use our tools to experience our platforms without personalization," the spokesperson said. "We continue to engage extensively with the European Commission, our DSA regulator in Europe, and believe this is a matter for them - not one to be litigated in individual courts in member states."
Meta shares were up 1.2% in recent afternoon trading.
