Meta Platforms Faces Scrutiny From States With Call for Security Review on Increase in Account Takeovers by Scammers
Mar 6, 2024 9:11 AM

11:48 AM EST, 03/06/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms ( META ) faces scrutiny on the rise in Facebook and Instagram account takeovers by scammers and frauds with a bipartisan coalition of 41 attorneys general calling for a data security review, New York State Attorney General Letitia James said Wednesday in a statement.

The company should "thoroughly review data security practices for protecting its users' accounts from being unfairly locked out or taken over by scammers," the statement said.

"To have Meta fail to properly protect users from scammers trying to hijack accounts and lock rightful owners out is unacceptable," James said.

The attorneys general called for Meta to increase staffing to respond to account takeover complaints, greater investment in account takeover mitigation tactics and enforcing stronger actions against scammers.

"We invest heavily in our trained enforcement and review teams and have specialized detection tools to identify compromised accounts and other fraudulent activity," a Meta spokesperson said in an email to MT Newswires. "We regularly share tips and tools people can use to protect themselves, provide a means to report potential violations, work with law enforcement and take legal action."

Meta shares rose 1.4% in recent trading Wednesday.
